When it comes to looking at oil for timber floors one of the important questions that needs to be considered is durability. There are many oil products around that simply do not have the durability because they do not have the solid content required to perform long-term.
Osmo hard wax oil is incredibly tough and in the range, Osmo Polyx is the key performer. It is an excellent hard wearing durable product that is used on a number of sites because of its incredible durability and ease-of-use and ease of maintenance.
It is ideal for commercial and domestic sites and also ideal for heritage buildings because it will take away the need to continually sand the surface of the timber and thereby lose valuable substance from the floor. Osmo Polyx is easy to maintain without sanding.
Osmo is designed as a product that penetrates the timber and works with the timber instead of being a sacrificial coating that sits on top. Polyurethane is a sacrificial coating that sits on top of the timber, scratches as it wears and therefore looks unsightly for a period of time until is possible to re-sand the surface and apply fresh coating. So, with a polyurethane surface and more recently with a waterborne polyurethane surface you see white scratching as the floor wears. This is something you need to live with as the floor wears, and you know as the floor scratches that you’re working towards the point at which you will need to re-sand the surface or at the very least use a rotary polishing sander to cut back the surface. It’s a major undertaking to maintain a polyurethane surface.
With Osmo Polyx it is far different. Firstly, the oil sits in the timber, so you don’t get the unsightly white scratches on the surface. Secondly as you begin to see wear areas you do not need to sand back the surface in most instances. All you need to do is to clean the surface and then apply some of the oil to that specific area of wear. We generally apply oil with a rag in a circular motion to an area of wear and the area of wear will simply disappear without any sanding or heavy-duty work. You do not have to live with a floor that looks unsightly or with unsightly scratches. It is that much better than polyurethane.
Osmo Polyx is made from renewable resources using plant oils and waxes and is outstanding for its use of high-quality natural resources and for its high solid content.
